British vs. American Vowels

http://www.rachelsenglish.com/videos/american-vs-british-english-vowels

Following on from my vowel lesson at NELS last week, I wanted to share this video with you as it contrasts the differences between American and British English vowel sounds.
Can you hear the differences? And can you make them? Your aim should be to be able to recognise the words, and to be understood when you speak, so you don’t have to sound exactly like this.

  1. Hello, Hannah! This is Yasuhiro.
Thank you for introducing this video site!
I could understand the differences between American and British English vowel sounds. Before, I was thinking that American vowel sounds was nearer “Japanese English” than British its, because American its is familiar to us. But I realized that British its is nearer to us by watching this video. For example, American “hot” pronounces like ”haut”, and British “Hot” pronounces like “Hot (ホット)”. Japanese also say “Hot”. It’s very interesting!
I had an awareness that I am not good at British English, but my awareness may be changed by your introduce.
    Thank you! 🙂

    • I’m glad you found the video interesting. Like I mentioned, as long as you can understand and be understood you have achieved your goal. Vowels are not easy because they vary so much even in the same country, but like you said, some Japanese vowels are similar so I hope this makes it easier for you.

  2. Hi! I pronounced the words of the video after 2 lady’s pronunciations.
    I understood the differences of British and American English such as ” Hot ” , ” Honest “, ” Can “, Ham “, ” Thanks “, ” First “, ” Worst ” and ” Girl ” in the video.
But I couldn’t understand the difference of ” KNOW ” at all.
Could you please teach me it at next your lesson ?
And I’ll pronounce the differences of the first words that I was able to understand then so please check my pronunciations.
I hope I will be able to understand the differences completely!
