At NELS, the Common European Framework (CEF) of Reference for Languages is used to evaluate a student’s English level, following a free trial lesson with our teachers. The student is then advised about which classes would be most beneficial for him/her to take.

There are currently 5 NELS class levels: Beginner A0, (CEF) A1, A2, B1 and B2.

The table below gives a basic outline of overall language competency based on the CEF levels. For information in 日本語, click here.

Students can be re-evaluated as they progress in their English competency  in order to move up to the next NELS class level.
